Charging Guide for the Hyundai Kona

When making the switch to an electric car, charging is probably seen as the most daunting aspect, but it doesn’t have to be! It’s actually very simple once you understand how it works. This no-nonsense guide takes you through exactly what you need to do, and be aware of, when charging your Kona. So let’s dive in!

Public Charger

Public Charging

Public chargers can be easily located by using navigation system in the Hyundai Kona or via an App. We recommend installing Zapmap; their comprehensive database maps over 95% of all public charging stations across the UK, allowing you to easily find over 40,000 places to charge whilst on the road.

Zapmap can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, just follow the links below to install on your device. Once downloaded you can use the interactive map to find the locations nearest to you, or plan your journey with charging stops with their handy Route Planner.

When searching for a charging location, look out for the voltage output level of the charge point as this relates to how fast your Hyundai Kona will charge; the higher the level, the faster the charging experience:

Slow: With speeds below 6kW, slow charging can require 24 hours or more to complete a full charge. Convenient for short trips, but not practical for long journeys.

Fast: Achieving between 7kW to 22kW, fast charging can deliver a partial to complete charge in between 5-8 hours.

Rapid DC Chargers: Delivering between 22kW to 100kW, ideal for longer journeys requiring short stops to top up.

Ultra-Rapid DC chargers: The fastest way to charge an EV, Ultra-Rapid chargers provide power between 100kW and 350kW, allowing you to top up in as little as 20 minutes.

When you arrive at the charge point ensure you are using the correct charging cable before starting your charge session.

You are responsible for all charging costs, including any idle fees, when charging your Hyundai Kona at a public charge point. Europcar is not responsible for any additional costs that may be incurred if charge points are out of use.

The All-Important Cables

The Hyundai Kona comes with a Type 2 Cable for seamless charging when out and about, and at home. The cable is fitted with a tamper-proof label to identify they’re the original OEM cables and should always be stored in the boot. Any cables returned to Europcar without the label may be subject to additional charges.

Type 2

A Type 2 charging cable is the European-standard plug-type used by every new electric car. It features a seven-pin connection at both ends, which allows you to easily plug in to every home wallbox, and most public car chargers.

DRIVING

The Kona Electric features a regenerative braking system that recovers energy during deceleration, enhancing battery efficiency. You can adjust the regenerative braking intensity using the paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel, allowing for a customised driving experience. Additionally, the vehicle offers multiple driving modes—such as Eco, Comfort, and Sport—that adjust performance and efficiency to suit your preferences and road conditions.

TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF

To turn off the Kona Electric, bring the vehicle to a complete stop and shift the gear selector to ‘Park’ (P). Press the push-button start to power down the car. For additional safety, always double-check that the parking brake is engaged before leaving the vehicle.

CHARGING YOUR PHONE

You can charge your phone wirelessly by placing it on the wireless charging pad located in the centre console. Make sure wireless charging is enabled in the vehicle’s settings. An indicator light will confirm charging is in progress. Alternatively, connect your phone to one of the USB ports in the front or rear of the vehicle. The front USB ports support both charging and data transfer, while rear USB ports are for charging only.

ACCESSING STORAGE

To open the boot, use the key fob or press the release button located above the license plate. Some models also offer a hands-free smart trunk feature, allowing you to open the boot automatically by standing behind the vehicle with the key fob. Inside the car, storage options include a glove compartment, centre console storage, door pockets, and cup holders.

USING THE SAT NAV

Access the navigation system by pressing the “Map” or “Nav” button on the infotainment display. Enter your destination using the on-screen keyboard, and the system will calculate the best route. Press “Start” to begin turn-by-turn navigation, with directions displayed on the screen and announced via voice guidance. The system also provides real-time traffic updates and can locate nearby charging stations for added convenience.

ACCESSING CLIMATE CONTROLS

To adjust the climate settings, press the “Climate” button on the centre console. You can control temperature, fan speed, and airflow direction using the touch screen or physical buttons, depending on your model. Rear passengers, if equipped, can adjust their settings using controls on the back of the centre console. Additionally, the Hyundai Blue Link app allows you to remotely pre-condition the interior to a comfortable temperature before starting your journey.

CONNECTING YOUR PHONE

To pair your phone, enable Bluetooth on your smartphone and access the vehicle’s infotainment system. Press the “Setup” button, navigate to “Bluetooth,” and select “Add New.” Choose your phone from the list of available devices and confirm the pairing code shown on both the car’s display and your phone. Once paired, you can use features like hands-free calling and audio streaming. The Kona Electric also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration.

ADJUSTING THE SIDE-VIEW MIRRORS

To adjust the side-view mirrors, use the mirror adjustment switch located on the driver’s door panel. Select the left or right mirror by toggling the switch and use the directional pad to set the mirror angle. Some models include an auto-tilt feature that tilts the mirrors downward when reversing, which can be activated by ensuring the toggle switch is set to the left or right position.

ADJUSTING THE SEATS

The front seats can be adjusted using the controls on the side of the seat. Slide the control forward or backward to move the seat position, lift or press the lever to adjust the seat height, and tilt the lever to modify the backrest angle. These adjustments allow you to find the most comfortable driving position.

ADJUSTING THE STEERING WHEEL

To adjust the steering wheel, locate the adjustment lever under the steering column. Pull the lever down to unlock the steering wheel and move it up, down, in, or out to your desired position. Once set, push the lever back up to lock the steering wheel securely in place.

ADJUSTING THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR

The interior rear-view mirror can be manually adjusted to achieve the best viewing angle. It is equipped with an anti-glare function to reduce headlight glare from vehicles behind you, particularly helpful during night time driving.

ADJUSTING THE CHILD LOCK

To activate the child lock, open the rear door and locate the child lock switch on the edge of the door. Slide the switch to the lock position. This ensures that the rear doors cannot be opened from the inside, providing added safety for young passengers.

ADJUSTING THE VEHICLE LIGHTS

The vehicle’s lighting controls are located on the stalk to the left of the steering wheel. You can turn the lights off, set them to automatic mode for ambient light adjustments, or manually activate the parking lights or headlights by rotating the switch to the corresponding position.
